Sonosite Edge II Needle Guide Unavailable: Check ECG and Bracket

If the Edge II Guide control is unavailable, separate the documented ECG and Centerline conflicts from transducer capability, bracket suitability and an unresolved support case.

Editorial illustration of a portable ultrasound console, transducer bracket and disconnected ECG cable, titled Edge II Guide Unavailable? Check ECG and Bracket

What does the Guide control actually do?

This guide is for hospital healthcare technology management (HTM) teams, independent service organizations and distributors evaluating an Edge II configuration. Its decision is whether an unavailable on-screen control can be explained by the documented state, whether an accessory order needs more evidence, or whether the case needs OEM support. It does not teach needle placement, select a probe for a patient or replace the operator and accessory instructions.

Table 4-1 describes Guide as the control that turns needle guidelines on and off. It is optional and depends on transducer type. For single-angle and multi-angle brackets, the touchpad moves the depth cursor; a multi-angle bracket uses the A, B or C selection. The same table has a Page x/x control for moving between pages of on-screen controls. Before recording a control as absent, distinguish a missing key from a key on another control page, a visible key with no guidelines, and a guideline mismatch. 1

The accessory document explains that, with a guide-capable transducer and an available needle-guide control, the system generates a pair of lines representing the anticipated needle path. Those lines are intended for use with brackets that have installed needle guides. This is a relationship between a specified accessory and a display feature, not permission to combine any bracket that physically fits with any visible line. 2

The documented ECG cable conflict

The decisive sentence in Table 4-1 is: “Guide is not available when the ECG cable is connected.” The ECG section separately identifies ECG as an optional feature requiring a Sonosite ECG cable and available only on the cardiac exam type. Its connection instructions identify the system, mini-dock or docking system as possible connection points. Record the whole connection arrangement, rather than looking only at one side of the console. 1

A change from a cardiac exam to another exam is therefore insufficient evidence that this restriction has been removed: the rule names cable connection. Likewise, Show/Hide changes the ECG signal display; the guide does not identify it as a way to remove the cable conflict. This distinction is useful when the handover says “ECG is off” but means only that no waveform is visible. 1

The responsible operator should assess any connection change outside an active procedure and follow the applicable operating instructions and facility policy. If ECG is needed, escalate the workflow conflict to the clinical team. Do not remove a required connection simply to obtain another control. If the cable is no longer required and the documented state is restored, record whether Guide becomes available; the manual gives no one-second restoration guarantee. Continued unavailability needs the remaining checks, not a conclusion about a sensing pin or an internal controller.

Illustrative handover, not a service case: a shared Edge II was previously used with ECG and is later reported to have no Guide key. The incoming engineer records the current transducer and exam, photographs the connection arrangement without patient information, and establishes whether “ECG off” meant a hidden trace or an unplugged cable. A subsequent observation of the control state can support a documented explanation for that unit. It cannot estimate how often this happens across a fleet or prove all other functions are healthy.

A verification sequence before spending money

Use this sequence as an evidence checklist. The order puts observable states before purchases and service assumptions; it is not an OEM fault-isolation procedure or a ranking of common causes. The bracket and angle checks address suitability and safety even when the control is visible. They are not proof that the console senses bracket attachment. 1 2

Source: Edge II User Guide Table 4-1, pp. 3-15 and 7-1–7-3; CIVCO companion pp. 4–8. Order and evidence fields are editorial synthesis.

Do not turn the checklist into a requirement to swap probes, reload software or repeatedly restart a scanner during patient care. When a safe, authorized comparison is available, record exactly what changed and what remained the same. A different probe with a different exam type is not a controlled comparison. If no appropriate comparison is available, say so in the support record rather than describing the system as tested.

Transducer capability: Guide is not SNP

Table 4-5 concerns SNP, which enhances linear structures within a selected angle range. Table 4-6 concerns available imaging modes and exams and uses footnote e to mark needle-guide capability. That footnote directs the reader to Using CIVCO Products with FUJIFILM Sonosite Systems. Neither table is a bracket part-number catalog. The two lists must be read independently, including superscripts and exam columns. 1

For example, HSL25x appears in the SNP table but has no needle-guide footnote in Table 4-6. ICTx and P10x have the guide-capable marker but do not appear in the SNP table. This establishes a distinction in these documents; absence from a list is not proof that no accessory has ever existed. Preserve the complete probe designation, including x, xi or xp and standard/armored wording where applicable. Similar names are not substitutes. 1 2

The C35x documentation gap is a reason for clarification, not evidence of withdrawal or incompatibility. The August 2023 system guide and May 2025 companion have different scopes and dates. A later table’s silence does not resolve an earlier marker. An order should name the precise system, transducer and accessory references and request written confirmation of the applicable combination. Do not fill the gap using a dealer’s frequency table or a similarly named probe. 1 2

Bracket type and the A/B/C requirement

A fixed-angle or multiple-fixed-angle bracket is different from a variable-angle accessory. For an applicable multi-angle bracket, the Edge II User Guide requires the selected angle on the bracket and the system to match. The companion repeats that requirement and identifies the appropriate CIVCO reference guide as the authority for attachment. The A/B/C letters are matching identifiers; this article does not assign them universal degree values or recommend an approach angle. 1 2

The Infiniti exception matters. On page 4, the companion expressly warns that system software biopsy guidelines do not support the CIVCO Infiniti Needle Guidance system and that the two must not be used together. Sonosite’s product overview describes Infiniti Plus as an open-channel, infinite-angle design. Do not treat that marketing name as evidence of an A/B/C bracket that works with the Edge II overlay. Obtain accessory-specific confirmation instead of extending the multi-angle instructions to a different design. 2 4

The companion also says the guidelines display is unavailable when the centerline graphic is on. Centerline refers to the image/transducer center; it is not intended for a needle-guide bracket or bracket-associated guidelines. A single center reference and a pair of anticipated-path lines answer different questions. A buyer who asks only whether “a line appears” may miss that distinction. 2

For acceptance, keep the identities and documentation together: transducer label, bracket reference, kit reference, accessory instructions and any applicable angle designation. A visible overlay does not verify bracket fit, accessory condition or the needle path. The companion requires pre-use path verification, with a training and safety boundary. Qualified users must follow that document; this article provides no substitute test, tolerance or procedural technique. 2

Kit identity before an accessory order

Sonosite describes custom CIVCO brackets and starter kits, while CIVCO describes its design-and-validation collaboration and selected kit contents. These are useful procurement sources for the named products. They do not establish that every kit shown fits every Edge II transducer, that a reusable bracket includes all required disposables, or that a product is available in every market. CIVCO explicitly notes that availability and compatibility can vary by market. 4 5

Ask the supplier to separate the reusable bracket, the replacement guide components and any covers or other supplied items. Record manufacturer reference numbers rather than relying on “Sonosite compatible” in a quotation. Request the applicable system/transducer compatibility evidence and instructions, the supplied condition and quantity, and destination-market availability. If any reference is unreadable or the proposed kit differs from the documented combination, hold the order for clarification. 2 5

The companion permits only Sonosite- or CIVCO-approved accessories, requires the correct bracket for the transducer and directs users to the appropriate CIVCO guide for attachment and reprocessing. Apparent fit does not establish approval. No machining-tolerance, depth-error or safety-equivalence estimate is supported here for an aftermarket or 3D-printed substitute. Follow the exact instructions and facility policy for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and reuse; a generic kit description cannot set those requirements. 2

Accessory governance has a separate safety history: the probe recall census and care protocol includes guide, bracket and cover records. It provides context for preserving kit identity, not evidence that this Edge II or its accessory is recalled. Check the actual product and lot against applicable notices. When a service record is needed, the ultrasound repair documentation workflow explains how accessory identity follows the work order.

Safety boundaries that override convenience

Control availability is only one part of acceptance. Keep the following boundaries attached to the configuration record. They remain relevant if Guide reappears, and none is cleared by completing the availability checklist. 1 2

BoundaryDocumented limitDecision consequence
Bracket magnetsThe Edge II guide prohibits P10x or rP19x needle-guide brackets on patients with pacemakers or medical electronic implants; those brackets contain orientation magnets.Preserve that restriction in the accessory record and clinical handoff. Do not infer safety from the control being visible.
Multi-angle matchFor an applicable multi-angle bracket, the bracket and system must have the same A/B/C selection. An unresolved mismatch prevents acceptance of that guidance configuration; qualified operators must follow the accessory instructions.
ECG scopeThe Edge II ECG must not be used to diagnose cardiac arrhythmias or provide long-term cardiac monitoring.A connection change must be considered by the responsible clinical team; this page does not replace required monitoring.
Training and verificationThe companion requires training in interventional procedures and operation of the system/transducer, plus pre-use verification under its instructions.Engineering state checks do not authorize a procedure. An unresolved path or accessory problem remains an escalation issue.
Table 3. Documented limits and what they mean for the handoff.

Source: Edge II User Guide pp. 4-13, 4-32 and 9-11–9-12; CIVCO companion pp. 1–4 and 7–8.

The newer companion’s magnet warning covers additional transducer brackets across its listed systems. The Edge II user guide specifically names P10x and rP19x. Preserve the warning applicable to the exact accessory; do not infer a different probe’s compatibility from inclusion in a safety list. The documents do not support claims here about rare-earth materials, internal Hall sensors or a specific implanted-device response. 1 2

When is this a documented state or a support case?

An attached ECG cable gives a documented explanation for Guide unavailability. Centerline on gives a documented explanation for unavailable guidelines in the companion. An accessory that does not support software guidelines creates a configuration boundary, not a reason to buy a board. These findings are narrower than “nothing is broken”: the evidence answers the reported feature question without testing every other system function. 1 2

If those explanations do not account for the observation, keep the outcome unresolved. Chapter 7 troubleshooting, pages 7-1–7-2, has no dedicated missing-Guide or missing-ECG-control row. That is a bounded finding about the manual, not proof that the OEM considers every such symptom normal. The chapter directs persistent problems to Sonosite Technical Support. A missing row does not identify an operating-system failure, contaminated connector or failed acquisition board. 1

If the system has never shown Guide, ask Sonosite to confirm the supplied configuration and applicable options. The licensing section on page 7-3 describes keys for system/transducer software and says all functions except licensing become unavailable after its grace period. It does not establish a separately named Needle Guidance/SNP license, an installed-option roster or an option-specific lockout that can be diagnosed from this symptom. Record actual license messages and System Information; let OEM support determine their relevance. 1

Use the exact model and document revision

A shared brand name does not make a PX, LX or X-Porte instruction applicable to Edge II. The companion covers several systems and uses separate table columns, including a combined Edge II/SII column. Read that column alongside the Edge II system guide and the exact accessory instructions. Do not transfer a feature rule from another model, or dismiss a companion caution merely because a later platform also has it. 2

Sources checked on October 16, 2026 were Edge II P20516-08, published August 2023, and companion P01765-33, whose publication page says May 29, 2025. The Sonosite document index lists those versions; its July 15, 2025 entry for the companion is a listing date, not the publication date printed in the PDF. Recheck the current documents, notices and exact configuration when ordering or investigating a later software change. 1 2 3

The evidence packet and routing decision

A useful enquiry separates observations from hypotheses. State what was unavailable, what was connected and what changed. Remove patient identifiers from screenshots under facility policy and use approved service channels. Do not send patient images simply to show a missing control. The following fields support a unit-specific answer without pretending that the article has remotely diagnosed the system.

  • System: Edge II model, serial number, software versions and any actual license or fault message; relevant service or configuration change dates.
  • Control state: Guide, SNP or Centerline; absent key, unavailable selection, no displayed lines or a mismatch; current control page, exam type and imaging mode.
  • Connections: ECG cable state at the system and any mini-dock or docking system. Distinguish a hidden signal from a disconnected cable.
  • Transducer and accessory: Exact models, manufacturer part/reference numbers, label photos, bracket type, kit/lot identity, condition and applicable instruction revisions.
  • Observed comparison: Each authorized state change and the result, including what remained unresolved. Identify hypothetical explanations as hypotheses.
  • Requested decision: Configuration clarification, accessory compatibility confirmation, quantity/destination quotation or technical support investigation.

Table 4. Route the finding without converting it into a remote fault diagnosis.

Source: Editorial routing synthesis from the cited Edge II and companion requirements; no field-case frequency or success-rate dataset.

For example, a quote reading only “bracket for L38” is incomplete when the probe label says L38xi. The supplier needs the exact suffix and system, plus the intended bracket/kit reference and applicable instructions. Similarly, a service request reading “needle guide broken” should say whether the key is absent or a displayed guideline fails a required verification. These distinctions change the owner of the next action and help avoid sending an accessory-order question as a console repair request.

Where Rongtao fits—and where it does not

Rongtao’s documented repair-brand list covers GE, Philips, Siemens/Acuson, Canon/Toshiba, Samsung Medison, Mindray, Hitachi, Aloka and Esaote, with additional brand scope confirmed per enquiry. Sonosite is not among the documented repair brands. This article does not offer Edge II depot repair, license recovery or OEM-authorized service. Send those questions to Sonosite or the appropriate OEM service channel. 6

This model-specific operational reference supports the mixed-fleet readers of our portable and handheld fleet service guide. For work on Rongtao’s supported equipment, the services overview describes board and probe service scope. The company’s 48-hour real-machine testing claim applies to repaired boards; it is not an Edge II acceptance promise or a substitute for accessory verification. 6

For a supported-brand parts or repair enquiry, contact Rongtao with OEM, exact model, manufacturer part number, label photos and both sides of the board where relevant, symptom/error, quantity and destination. Confirm availability and service terms in the quotation. For the Edge II state covered here, use the evidence packet with Sonosite support and route patient/procedure decisions to the trained clinical team.

Frequently asked questions

Does a missing Guide key mean the control panel is faulty?
No such diagnosis follows from the symptom alone. Check control identity and pages, ECG connection, Centerline state, transducer documentation and accessory suitability. If the result remains unexplained, submit the observations to OEM support. 1 2

Is hiding the ECG trace enough?
The documented Guide restriction concerns the connected cable. Show/Hide controls the signal display. Record both states; do not equate a hidden waveform with disconnection or promise that a particular connection change will immediately restore Guide. 1

Does SNP support mean a mechanical needle guide is supported?
No. The SNP list and guide-capable markers differ. HSL25x appears in the SNP table without the Table 4-6 guide marker; ICTx and P10x have that marker without appearing in the SNP table. Exact accessory suitability still requires the companion and accessory instructions. 1 2

Can a visible line establish compatibility with an Infiniti bracket?
No. The companion warns against using system software biopsy guidelines with the CIVCO Infiniti system. It also distinguishes Centerline from bracket-associated guidelines. Confirm the exact accessory instructions rather than inferring compatibility from a product name or a visible display line. 2

Must we buy a separate Guide license?
The reviewed manual calls Guide optional but does not establish a separately named Guide/SNP license requirement. Send actual configuration and license information to Sonosite. Its general grace-period description is not evidence of a Guide-only lockout. 1

When can the configuration return to clinical use?
That decision belongs to qualified facility personnel under the exact system/accessory instructions and policy. Restoring a control does not clear accessory identity, damage, angle matching, implant restrictions or required verification. This guide provides no clinical-release authorization. 1 2
